How to use the trulend personal loan calculator

Enter the amount you plan to borrow, an estimated APR and a term in months. The personal loan calculator returns a fixed monthly payment, the total interest and the total you would repay over the full term.

  1. Amount: type the cash you need, from $500 to $5,000. If a lender may deduct an origination fee, see the fee section below before you settle on a number.
  2. APR: start with 24% if you are unsure, then try the range for your credit tier. Estimated APRs across lenders run from 6.99% to 35.99%.
  3. Term: pick between 6 and 36 months. Smaller balances usually fit 6 to 12 months; larger ones may run 12 to 36.
  4. Read the three results together: the monthly payment tells you if it fits your budget, and the total repaid tells you what it really costs.

Most trulend borrowers run the personal loan calculator three or four times. Try your ideal term, then one shorter and one longer, and write down each payment and total. A shorter term that you can comfortably afford almost always saves money; a longer term buys breathing room in the budget but costs more in interest.

How amortization works on a fixed-rate personal loan

Amortization means each fixed payment covers that month's interest first, and the rest reduces the balance. On personal loans, early payments are interest-heavy; later payments go mostly to principal, while the payment amount never changes.

Monthly interest equals the remaining balance times the APR divided by 12. At 24% APR the monthly rate is 2%, so on a $2,000 balance the first month's interest is $40.00. With a payment of $189.12, the other $149.12 pays down principal, leaving $1,850.88. Next month, interest is calculated on that smaller balance, so a little more of the same $189.12 goes to principal.

Estimated schedule: $2,000 over 12 months at 24% APR, no origination fee assumed
MonthInterestPrincipalBalance after payment
1$40.00$149.12$1,850.88
2$37.02$152.10$1,698.78
3$33.98$155.14$1,543.64
4$30.87$158.25$1,385.39
5$27.71$161.41$1,223.98
6$24.48$164.64$1,059.34
7$21.19$167.93$891.41
8$17.83$171.29$720.12
9$14.40$174.72$545.40
10$10.91$178.21$367.19
11$7.34$181.78$185.41
12$3.71$185.41$0.00

Add up the interest column and you get $269.44, which is exactly the difference between the $2,269.44 total repaid and the $2,000 borrowed. Notice that nearly 60% of all interest is paid in the first five months. That is why paying extra early, if your lender allows prepayment without a penalty, saves more than paying extra near the end.

Worked examples for common loan amounts

Here are estimates at a 24% APR sample rate for the personal loan amounts people request most often. Your actual APR, fees and terms depend on the lender, so treat these as planning numbers, not quotes.

Sample estimates at 24% APR, no origination fee assumed
AmountTermMonthly paymentTotal repaidTotal interest
$5006 months$89.26$535.56$35.56
$1,00012 months$94.56$1,134.72$134.72
$1,50012 months$141.84$1,702.08$202.08
$2,00012 months$189.12$2,269.44$269.44
$2,50018 months$166.76$3,001.68$501.68
$4,00024 months$211.48$5,075.52$1,075.52

A $500 phone or appliance fix repaid over six months costs about $35.56 in interest, and our $500 loan guide walks through 12- and 18-month options too. A $1,000 car repair over a year runs $94.56 a month; the $1,000 loan page compares that with six and 18 months. For a bigger repair or consolidating a few balances, the $4,000 loan page shows how a 24-month plan at $211.48 a month adds $1,075.52 in interest.

Trulending scenarios like these are useful for a gut check, and trulends searches for a payment estimate usually start here. If $211.48 a month would strain your budget, try $3,000 instead, or ask whether part of the bill can be paid in cash first so the personal loan covers only what you cannot.

How APR and term change what a personal loan costs

APR raises or lowers every payment, while the term spreads the balance over more or fewer months. A lower APR always reduces cost; a longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.

$2,000 over 12 months at different estimated APRs
Estimated APRMonthly paymentTotal repaidTotal interest
12%$177.70$2,132.40$132.40
18%$183.36$2,200.32$200.32
24%$189.12$2,269.44$269.44
30%$194.97$2,339.64$339.64
35.99%$200.91$2,410.92$410.92

Moving from 24% to 12% APR saves $137.04 on a one-year $2,000 personal loan, roughly the cost of a tank of gas a month for two months. Credit tier drives most of that difference: estimated ranges run about 7.99%–15.99% for excellent credit, 13.99%–21.99% for good, 19.99%–29.99% for fair and 27.99%–35.99% below 630. Our rates guide explains each tier.

$2,000 at 24% APR over different terms
TermMonthly paymentTotal repaidExtra cost vs 12 months
12 months$189.12$2,269.44—
18 months$133.40$2,401.20$131.76
24 months$105.74$2,537.76$268.32

Doubling the term from 12 to 24 months cuts the payment by $83.38 but roughly doubles the interest. Trulend borrowers who choose the longer term for safety can still prepay when cash allows, as long as the lender charges no prepayment penalty.

05

Factoring in an origination fee

Some personal loan lenders charge an origination fee of 0% to 10%, often deducted from the amount you receive. If you need a set amount in hand, borrow enough to cover the fee and recalculate the payment.

Say a trulend borrower needs $2,000 for a repair and the lender charges 5%. Borrowing $2,000 leaves you $1,900 after the $100 fee. To receive the full $2,000, you would borrow about $2,105.26, and at 24% over 12 months that payment rises to about $199.07, for roughly $2,388.84 repaid. Enter the larger amount in the calculator to see the real cost, and check that the lender's quoted APR, which includes the fee, matches what you expect.

06

Using the calculator to plan an early payoff

You can estimate early-payoff savings by running a shorter term with the same amount. The gap between the two totals is roughly what paying ahead could save, if the lender has no prepayment penalty.

Take a $2,000 trulend scenario at 24% APR. On an 18-month plan you would repay $2,401.20; on a 12-month plan, $2,269.44. If you sign the 18-month personal loan for its lower $133.40 payment but send $189.12 whenever money allows, you move toward the 12-month result and could save up to $131.76. A tax refund applied in month three does even more, because interest is highest early in the schedule.

  • Confirm in the loan agreement that extra payments go to principal, not to next month's payment.
  • Ask whether the personal loan has a prepayment penalty; most lenders that publish terms say they do not.
  • Keep the required payment automatic and make extra payments separately, so a tight month never causes a late fee.

07

What a calculator estimate cannot tell you

A personal loan calculator shows math, not an offer. Lenders set the actual APR, fees, term options and approval after reviewing your credit, income and state, and some round payments or bill on schedules other than monthly.

  • Your real APR can land anywhere in a lender's range, and many people see a rate higher than the lowest advertised.
  • Late fees, returned-payment fees and optional add-ons are not included in the estimate.
  • Some lenders bill biweekly, which changes the payment amount even if the total is similar.
  • The first payment date can shift interest by a few dollars depending on how many days pass before it is due.
  • Funding can arrive as soon as the next business day after approval, depending on the lender, but not every request is approved.

Use the calculator to set a trulend payment ceiling, then compare actual offers against it. When you are ready, a trulend request through the personal loan request form is free, and any lender that can help shows its own terms. Trulends readers who check the eligibility basics first usually know what documents to have ready.
